Postdoctoral Researcher - Marine Nature-based Solutions, 1 FTE, Ryan Institute, 011934
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 1.0 FTE 2 year fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Ryan Institute at the University of Galway, Ireland.
This 2-year position is funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment with the University of Galway as a core partner and is available from 1st of October 2026 to contract end date of September 2028.
Project Background
The EU Nature Restoration Regulation and Ireland's national climate and biodiversity commitments require significant improvements in the condition and resilience of coastal and marine ecosystems. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognised as a key approach to restoring degraded habitats, enhancing biodiversity, improving ecosystem services, and strengthening resilience to coastal hazards such as erosion, flooding, and sea-level rise.
This project will support the implementation of Ireland's Nature Restoration and coastal adaptation objectives by identifying and prioritising locations where coastal and marine NbS can deliver the greatest ecological, climate adaptation, and socio-economic benefits. Using GIS-based spatial analysis and integrated environmental, ecological, coastal, and socio-economic datasets, the project will develop an evidence-based decision-support framework to identify suitable restoration opportunities and guide future investment in ecosystem restoration and climate resilience.
The Ryan Institute
is the University's largest interdisciplinary research institute. It offers a vibrant and welcoming interdisciplinary research environment, bringing together researchers from across science, engineering, social sciences and the humanities to work collaboratively on pressing sustainability and environmental challenges. This post will contribute to the Institute's Science for Society and engaged research agenda.
Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €47,273 - €60,250 per annum (subject to the project's funding limitations), pro rata for part-time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project's funding limitations), where evidence of prior years' equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
