Post-Doctoral Researcher (Integrative Biologist) - APC Microbiome Ireland

24 Months Fixed Term, Whole-time Post

We are currently recruiting a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher - Integrative Biologist to join the Microbe2Mind Initiative led by Prof. John F. Cryan at APC Microbiome Ireland.

The successful candidate will take intellectual and experimental ownership of the integrative biology strand of Microbe2Mind, designing experiments across biological scales to identify and validate causal mechanisms linking microbial states to host physiology, brain function and behaviour. They will investigate how microbial, immune, endocrine, circadian and neural systems interact to generate brain-body phenotypes, and how perturbations including chronic psychosocial stress, systemic inflammation and circadian disruption reshape communication across these systems.

The position will combine systems physiology, host-microbe biology and multi-modal phenotyping with metabolomic, immune, endocrine and behavioural approaches. Working closely with researchers in experimental immunology, systems neuroscience, microbiome science and computational biology, the successful candidate will integrate findings across biological scales to identify mechanisms of brain-body communication.

The position is particularly suited to an experimental biologist with broad expertise in systems physiology, host-microbe interactions, metabolomics and/or immune and endocrine biology, together with strong quantitative skills and an interest in integrative approaches. All relevant animal research will be conducted in accordance with Directive 2010/63/EU and S.I. No. 543 of 2012. The role requires excellent experimental, analytical, organisational and communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment.

UCC is an accredited research organisation and as such can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.

Post Duration: 2 years in the first instance, renewable for up to 5 years subject to continued funding and satisfactory performance.

Please note that Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.
