JOB SYNOPSIS

The School of Engineering at the University of Limerick has close links with both national and international aviation companies and is committed to conducting relevant impactful research to provide solutions for industry and societal needs. Ideal candidates for this post will have a primary degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related area and a PhD degree (level 10 NFQ) in Mechanical Engineering or closely related area. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent research programme supported by extramural funding and to supervise postgraduate research students. The successful candidate is expected to be able to work independently as well as contribute to research centres/groups such as the Bernal Institute as a member. Candidates should have the ability to lecture students in Thermofluids and other Mechanical Engineering subjects and be committed to teaching excellence. The School of Engineering is part of the Faculty of Science & Engineering at the University of Limerick (ranked 401 in the QS world university rankings 2026). The school has a strong focus on excellent engineering science research and education and is ranked in the top 301-350 of Mechanical Engineering Institutions globally (QS Stars 2025 - Mechanical Engineering). Our School offers internationally accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (by Engineers Ireland - Washington Accord Signatory) across a range of engineering disciplines including Aeronautical, Biomedical, Civil, Design & Manufacture, Digital Mechatronics, and Mechanical, in addition to programmes in Construction Management and Engineering and Technology Management. The school offers postgraduate research programmes (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) in a variety of disciplines, including Industrial Automation and Manufacturing, Composites, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Fluid Dynamics, Aerospace Engineering, and others. The school holds a Silver Athena SWAN award. We are actively committed to implementing a range of gender diversity actions to encourage a more balanced and inclusive environment and strongly encourage staff to avail themselves of university-led work/life balance initiatives and are proactive in mainstreaming such initiatives within the school.
