About the Role

The Trainee Accountant will report to the Financial Controller and work closely with the Financial Accountant and wider Finance Team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone starting their professional accounting career to gain broad, hands-on experience across a busy finance function. The role will provide exposure to general accounting, month-end reporting, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, tax compliance and management reporting.

The successful candidate will initially receive training and support across a range of finance activities. As their knowledge and experience develop, they will be expected to take increasing ownership of assigned tasks, complete recurring processes independently and accurately, and demonstrate continued development in their accounting knowledge and understanding of the business.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain and update the general ledger, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and in a timely manner.
• Prepare bank reconciliations, investigate reconciling items and assist with daily banking activities.
• Process and reconcile assigned accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
• Prepare assigned month-end schedules, reconciliations and journals, with responsibility increasing as experience develops.
• Assist with the preparation and review of balance sheet reconciliations.
• Monitor and analyse expenses to ensure accuracy and compliance with company policies and procedures.
• Support the preparation of tax and regulatory compliance returns.
• Maintain and update the fixed asset register.
• Assist with external audit requirements by preparing and providing supporting documentation and information.
• Prepare data and supporting information for management reports and KPI dashboards using Excel and Power BI.
• Work closely with the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable teams to investigate and resolve queries.
• Provide cover and support for Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activities when required.
• Assist with ad-hoc financial analysis, reporting and finance projects.
• Understand and follow established finance processes, procedures and internal controls.
• Identify unusual or unfamiliar transactions and raise queries with the appropriate member of the Finance Team.
• Ensure assigned work is completed accurately, completely and within agreed deadlines.
• Work closely with the Financial Accountant to develop technical accounting knowledge and an understanding of the company's financial processes.
• Demonstrate the ability to learn new processes, retain training provided and progressively complete assigned tasks independently.
The Candidate

We are looking for someone who is at the beginning of their accounting career and is keen to learn and develop within a growing finance function.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in accounting and finance, excellent attention to detail and a proactive approach to learning. They should be comfortable asking questions when required while also demonstrating the ability to apply previous training and develop greater independence as their experience grows.

A positive attitude, willingness to take ownership of tasks, ability to work as part of a team and commitment to producing accurate work will be important to success in the role.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
• Relevant degree or third-level qualification in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline, or currently pursuing/committed to pursuing a professional accounting qualification.
• Strong numerical and analytical skills.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Ability to learn new processes and apply training provided.
• Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• A proactive attitude and willingness to take responsibility for assigned tasks.
Desirable
• Previous experience in an office, finance or accountancy environment.
• Experience using an ERP or accounting system, with SAP Business One experience considered an advantage.
• Experience with Power BI or other reporting/analytical tools.
• Currently studying towards, or intending to commence, a recognised professional accounting qualification such as ACCA or ACA.

Over time, the successful candidate should be capable of taking ownership of recurring accounting tasks, completing reconciliations and month-end activities accurately, understanding the underlying accounting treatment and identifying issues that require further review.
