Cloud Engineer II - Office Hybrid in Leopardstown, Dublin 18
ICON is a global healthcare intelligence and clinical research organisation united by a mission to bring new medicines and treatments to patients faster.
As a values-driven organisation, integrity, collaboration, agility, and inclusion are at the heart of how we work and interact with each other, customers, patients and suppliers.
What You Will Do:
• Recognize, exemplify and adhere to ICON's values, centred on our commitment to People, Clients and Performance.
• As a member of staff, contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by simplifying processes, improving technical delivery, and adding measurable value to the business.
• Design, build, deploy and support secure, scalable and resilient cloud solutions across one or more major public cloud platforms, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Provide hands-on engineering expertise for the deployment of cloud infrastructure, services and application hosting patterns, with a strong focus on automation, repeatability and operational reliability.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform, Bicep, ARM templates, CloudFormation or equivalent technologies to ensure cloud environments are version-controlled, auditable and consistently deployed.
• Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines to automate build, test, security validation and deployment processes for infrastructure and cloud-hosted applications, using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins or equivalent platforms.
• Deploy and operate containerised workloads and cloud-native services using technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, AKS, EKS or GKE, where appropriate to the solution architecture.
• Implement cloud networking, identity, access management, secrets management, logging, monitoring and alerting in line with security, compliance and operational standards.
• Work closely with application, infrastructure, security and operations teams to translate business and technical requirements into well-architected cloud solutions.
• Advise product and application teams on appropriate cloud patterns, deployment approaches and platform services, supporting them to adopt scalable, secure and supportable solutions rather than simply executing infrastructure tasks.
• Contribute to a platform engineering approach by developing reusable templates, golden paths, self-service deployment patterns and standardised cloud services that enable application teams to deploy solutions consistently and efficiently.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across cloud platforms, deployment pipelines and production environments, ensuring timely restoration of service and continuous improvement of solution reliability.
• Support cloud migration, modernisation and platform engineering initiatives, including assessment of existing workloads, design of target-state architectures and execution of deployment plans.
• Continuously optimise cloud environments for performance, availability, security and cost, making practical recommendations based on usage patterns, monitoring data and platform best practice.
• Support FinOps and cost accountability practices, including effective tagging standards, budget visibility, cost governance, chargeback or showback models, and use of reserved capacity or savings plans where appropriate.
• Maintain high-quality technical documentation, runbooks, deployment guides and operational procedures for cloud services and solutions.
• Stay current with evolving cloud technologies, DevOps practices and industry best practice, and apply this knowledge to improve ICON's cloud capability.
Your Profile:
• Essential experience should include strong hands-on expertise in at least one of Azure, AWS or GCP, with practical experience deploying production cloud solutions.
• Experience across multiple cloud platforms is highly desirable and will be considered a strong advantage.
• The candidate must be familiar with modern CI/CD deployment practices and have practical experience working with source control, automated deployment pipelines and release processes.
• Strong scripting or automation skills, for example PowerShell, Bash, Python or similar, are required to support repeatable deployment and operational automation.
• Familiarity with cloud security principles, infrastructure governance, tagging, policy enforcement, monitoring and cost management is expected.
• Mentor junior team members and contribute to knowledge sharing across the cloud engineering and wider IT Operations teams.
