Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the School of Computer Science at the University of Galway, Ireland.

This position is funded by Horizon Europe and is available for 2 years.

A consortium of 15 partners across EU and an end-user from USA came together to delivers a safety-first digital twin fusing physics-based traffic dynamics with AI to prevent safety-critical events before crashes occur. While current management is reactive (acting only after incidents emerge), PROSAFE-TWIN identifies high-risk segments in advance. It transforms the Safe System Approach into an operational reality, providing road authorities with the predictive intelligence to intervene before escalation, directly supporting the EU's "Vision Zero" goals.

Within the project, the key roles of University of Galway include predictive intelligence, decision making, requirements, specifications, implementation and evaluation of prototypes, that will be used by multiple partners, including road authorities. In addition, developing and validating uncertainty-aware AI models for real-time crash risk prediction with guaranteed confidence bounds, interpretability, and fairness-by-design, using a blend of centralized and federated learning.

The School of Computer Science is ambitious and growing, and we invite the new appointees to contribute to this together with us. The vision of the School of Computer Science is to build a strong and sustainable learning environment with world-recognised research that informs high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching that is inclusive and relevant to the needs of our stakeholders and society in general.
