Clinical Senior Lecturer (Honorary) appointment for General Practitioners

The Clinical Senior Lecturer (CSL) (Honorary) appointment for General Practitioners is intended to recognise the vital contribution of UCC-affiliated General Practitioners (GPs) to the delivery of general practice-based education, research and scholarship for the Department of General Practice, School of Medicine, UCC. Additionally, the Department of General Practice hopes to strengthen education, research, scholarship and innovation capacity of general practice both regionally and nationally. Recognition as a CSL is in addition to, and does not interfere with any aspect of, the person's contract of employment or contract for services with the GP practice in which they work.

What does being a CSL entail?

The ways in which a CSL contributes to UCC's medical education programmes include the following. The following is not an exhaustive list and may change over time.

Teaching and learning

• Participate consistently in the support of clinical placements for UCC medical students
• Deliver clinical education relevant to speciality.
• Advise on and input to curriculum development relevant to speciality
• Participate in assessment and feedback to students in line with UCC School of Medicine guidelines and processes.
• Participate, if required, in accrediting body activities - e.g. inspections, annual returns, re-accreditation activities.

Research and innovation

• Supervise and direct medical students undertaking research, audit, and quality improvement projects in line with University and UCC School of Medicine guidelines for this group.
• Supervise (as primary or additional supervisor) and mentor postgraduate research students undertaking Masters, MD, and PhD programmes in line with agreements set for this purpose by the University
• Where feasible and appropriate (and in accordance with the University's procedures, including in respect of ethical approvals), collaborate with the University in the conduct of approved research and innovation projects. "Primary Investigator" status may be agreed by UCC for a specific CSL undertaking particular projects and will be bound by agreement with terms as set for this purpose by UCC e.g. the template Grant Hosting Agreement.
• Use affiliation to UCC School of Medicine, including Department, on all publications and funded research applications.

Academic leadership

• Represent UCC School of Medicine on relevant local, national, and international groups and organisations, if required.
• Act as UCC's representative on appointment panels, if requested.

What does UCC give back to CSLs?

Recognition as a CSL is not a contract of employment and does not in itself carry any salary. However, this does not preclude some remunerated services being provided by CSLs to UCC. For example, CSLs may receive payment for agreed teaching and examining activities on the agreed rate, in compliance with UCC's policy on Recruitment of Hourly Occasional Staff. In such cases, an Hourly Occasional Staff Contract may be issued, in line with that policy.

CSLs will be entitled to access many of UCC's support services, development opportunities and facilities. The following are the main examples at the present time. These may change from time to time.

• Access to a UCC email address. Please note accounts become dormant after 12 months without being used, or 3 months for accounts that have never been logged into. Updating of account may be required by IT services on a periodic basis.
• Eligibility to apply for access to UCC library and library services, subject to application criteria.
• Access to UCC sports facilities at staff rates.
• Access to research advice and support from the Office of the Vice-President for Research and Innovation and the Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, College of Medicine and Health.
• Access to the facilities of the School of Medicine to support the teaching and examining aspects of the role of a CSL.
