Senior Photonics Engineer
Atlantic Technological University [ATU], Ulster University [UU] with Tyndall National Institute [Tyndall] have been successful in winning €8.46 million PEACEPLUS funding for the establishment of the Semiconductor Photonics Education and Research (SPEAR) Centre. The centre will develop a Photonics research, training and innovation response to challenges outlined in the EU Chips Act 2023 and will simultaneously address existing deficits in high-skill/high-value employment and research infrastructure in the border region.
SPEAR will focus on photonics system integration, prototyping of systems and boosting smart manufacturing innovation in Photonics using AI.
Central to the project's aims is the establishment of an Industrial Innovation Fund which will identify and deliver shorter form innovation projects providing photonics knowledge/skills and system integration /prototyping solutions for SMEs. Critical to this is the employment of senior research engineers and PRDAs to lead and implement the industrial innovation projects into SMEs across the border region.
The role of the engineers/PRDAs will be to visit companies, to help companies identify technology needs [both in products and processes], and to propose/evaluate photonics related solutions. It is envisaged that these projects will range from delivering training to delivering prototype hardware and software solutions; and to support technical input for follow-on UKRI/EU research funding.
ATU is seeking to recruit a highly motivated research engineer to lead research, design and implementation work in the integration of photonics technology in new products and manufacturing processes in a wide range of industries.
The successful applicant will join an experienced and growing team in the ATU WiSAR Lab who have been delivering innovative embedded wireless solutions to industry for over 20 years. The successful applicant will be expected to build on this history by developing research into emerging photonics technology and exploiting the opportunities that this technology will provide.
