THE PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Rowing Performance Coach is responsible for the coordination and delivery of a high-performance rowing programme aligned to supporting student-athletes and crews representing Dublin University Boat Club and Trinity College Dublin. This role requires someone with in-depth knowledge of the theory and practical delivery needed to support student-athletes in a performance-focused rowing environment, with a particular emphasis on senior crews and the club's 1st VIII.

The role involves delivering on-water and land-based coaching, overseeing technical and physical preparation, and contributing to athlete recruitment, talent identification, and season planning within the wider university performance sport pathway.

CONTEXT

Trinity Sport's performance environment places a strong emphasis on building effective supports around performance teams and student-athletes, and this post contributes directly to that objective through the delivery of an ambitious rowing programme.

Dublin University Boat Club has a strong tradition of competitive success, including qualification, seeding and finals appearances at Henley Royal Regatta, extensive Irish Championship success, and athlete representation at U23 and Senior international level. The club operates from an established high-performance training base with access to VIII and small boat fleets, rowing ergometers, biomechanics analysis equipment, lactate testing, physiology support, and in-house Strength and Conditioning provision.

The role will have access to the resources and operational support of the club's Recruitment and Coaching Sub-Committees, volunteer coaching team, Strength and Conditioning coaches, and Boathouse Manager. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to the coordination and effective management of these resources in support of the club's high-performance objectives and athlete development pathway.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

- Deliver the club's rowing programme on and off the water within an agreed plan set by the coaching management group and line manager.

- Provide specialist coaching support to specified crews under the direction of the coach management group and line manager, preparing crews for senior competition in Ireland and the UK, including major domestic and international regattas

- Implement rowing training programmes across relevant levels of the club, delivering high-level technical coaching in a positive, ambitious and athlete-centred environment

- Monitor performance preparation for the programme's top senior crew throughout the season, ensuring appropriate progression toward key regattas and championships as set by the coaching management group.

- Use biomechanics technology, physiological monitoring and lactate testing to support athlete development, inform coaching decisions, and track performance progression

- Contribute to athlete recruitment, talent identification, crew selection and season planning within the wider university rowing programme

- Attend and support domestic and overseas training camps and competitions as part of the annual rowing calendar

- Assist with boat maintenance, equipment management and trailer towing, supporting safe and effective programme delivery

- Work collaboratively with Trinity Sport staff and relevant support personnel to strengthen the club's high-performance culture and integrated athlete support environment

- Hold regular planning and review meetings with the coaching management group and other relevant staff, ensuring work is measured and evaluated against agreed objectives and programme outcomes

- Compile regular reports on programme delivery, athlete progress and performance towards targets and key milestones of the coaching management group.

- Ensure that all activity is delivered in line with Trinity College Dublin policies, safeguarding expectations, safety procedures and relevant data protection requirements

- Undertake other duties, consistent with the grade of the post, as may reasonably be assigned by the line manager or nominee

Qualifications:

- Certified Rowing Qualification and evidence of continual professional develop recognised by Rowing Ireland and/or British Rowing (essential)

- Current first aid qualification, or willingness to obtain one prior to commencement (essential)

- Safeguarding certification recognised by Rowing Ireland and/or British Rowing, or willingness to obtain certification prior to commencement (essential)

- Full Driving Licence (essential), towing licence (desirable) and Powerboat launch licence (desirable)

- Degree-level qualification in sport, coaching, sports science, performance, or a related field (desirable)

- Postgraduate qualification in performance coaching, sports science, or a related discipline (desirable)
