Description

The Biosensor team is seeking a motivated engineer to contribute to the development of advanced sensing technologies for medical and diagnostic applications. The successful candidate will be involved in the design, characterisation, and development of biomarker and dissolved gas sensors, with a particular focus on electrochemical sensing technologies.

This role is suited to an engineer with some prior hands-on experience in sensor or electrochemical system development, who is ready to take ownership of technical workstreams while collaborating closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams. The candidate will contribute to improving sensor performance and supporting product development activities, from early-stage design through to verification and potential transfer to manufacturing.

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical foundation combined with practical laboratory experience, and an interest in applying sensing technologies to real-world diagnostic or monitoring applications.

Roles & Responsibilities

As part of the Design Team in the Biosensors group, the successful Development Engineer will:
  • Contribute to the design and development of biomarker and/or dissolved gas sensor technologies.
  • Plan and execute laboratory experiments for sensor characterisation and performance evaluation.
  • Analyse and interpret data to inform design decisions and optimisation strategies.
  • Drive improvements in sensor performance, including sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and reproducibility.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (Quality, Test, Reliability, Manufacturing) to support development activities.
  • Participate in testing involving biological or aqueous samples where required.
  • Maintain accurate and structured development documentation in line with product development processes.
  • Contribute to troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of technical challenges.
  • Support verification, validation, and technology transfer activities as projects mature.
  • Contribute to the generation of new ideas and intellectual property across sensing technologies, materials, testing approaches, and manufacturing processes.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:
  • BSc or MSc in Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.
  • 2-5 years' experience in sensor development, electrochemistry, or related laboratory R&D work.
  • Practical experience in experimental design, laboratory testing, and data analysis.
  • Good understanding of electrochemical sensor principles and performance characteristics.
  • Ability to work independently on defined tasks while collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills.

Desired:
  • Experience with biomarker sensing or dissolved gas sensor development.
  • Familiarity with electrochemical techniques (e.g., potentiometry, amperometry, impedance spectroscopy).
  • Experience working with biological samples.
  • Exposure to product development environments, ideally within medical devices or diagnostics.
  • Awareness of ISO 13485 or regulated development processes.
  • Experience with materials relevant to sensors (e.g., membranes, enzymes, polymers).
  • Exposure to verification, validation, or transfer to manufacturing.
