Applications are invited for an appointment as a full-time, permanent Lecturer in Civil Engineering, School of Engineering at University of Galway.

University of Galway seeks to appoint an outstanding and ambitious individual with established expertise to capitalise upon and strengthen University of Galway's international position in areas including building information modelling, digital and industrialised construction methods, design for manufacture and assembly, geomatics engineering, project management and related areas. This specific role will contribute to the University's leadership in Civil Engineering, Construction, Engineering Management and Infrastructure. It will deliver upon our commitment to ensure our graduates are equipped with the latest innovative technologies in the Civil Engineering sector. The role will also enhance the University's research capacity in the application of these tools to the construction, infrastructure and project management sectors.

The civil engineering and construction sectors are being reshaped by digitisation, modern methods of construction, automation, geomatics, and the increasing availability of infrastructure data. These developments present major opportunities to improve the efficiency, sustainability, resilience, and productivity of how we design, construct, and operate buildings and infrastructure.

The successful candidate will contribute to advancing how these tools and approaches are applied in practice in areas including:
  • Digital and industrialised construction methods (e.g. modern methods of construction, design for manufacture and assembly, modular construction)
  • Building and infrastructure and project management information systems (e.g. BIM, digital twins, data platforms)
  • Geomatics, monitoring, and data capture from infrastructure assets
  • Data-driven and physics-informed approaches to infrastructure design and operation
  • Sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure systems

The successful candidate will make significant contributions to teaching, research, student project supervision, and programme administration across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Civil Engineering, Construction Innovation, Project and Construction Management and Engineering Management within the School of Engineering. In recent years, the School of Engineering at University of Galway have developed a suite of postgraduate courses and micro-credentials in civil engineering and construction innovation, equipping learners with key knowledge and skills in civil and environmental engineering, digital adoption, sustainability in the built environment and modern methods of construction.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and growing research ecosystem. It is expected that the appointee will develop an outstanding research programme, working with colleagues across the School of Engineering, relevant academic disciplines and research institutes. Civil Engineering has active clusters in hydraulics, water and wastewater engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, coastal/offshore engineering, transport and construction. Civil Engineering hosts Construct Innovate, Ireland's national research centre for construction technology and innovation, which collaborates with over 100 construction companies. In May 2026, the school of Engineering, will launch a new Centre for Infrastructure Research - The Ward & Burke Centre for Infrastructure Research and Innovation (CIRI), [ML1] which results from an exciting new industry partnership. The Centre will focus on innovative research into the design, operation and construction of modern infrastructure with a particular emphasis on the use of physics-informed data-driven solutions, automation and climate resilience.

Academic staff from Civil Engineering are active within the Ryan Institute which focuses on sustainability research and innovation. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for major funding awards, for example from the European Research Council (ERC), Research Ireland and Horizon Europe, while building national and international collaborations with academia and industry. The new appointee will be expected to disseminate their work through high quality peer-reviewed journals, high-impact conferences, and workshops.
