That was the case too back in 1845, at the height of the Great Irish Famine, when our university was founded at a time of profound social and ecological challenge. Over one hundred and eighty years later, University of Galway continues to build upon a long tradition of scholarship and discovery that confronts the problems of our time and serves the public good, empowering our people, city and region to prosper, and delivering research and education with international impact.

Today, University of Galway community comprises 19,700 students, 18% of whom are international students from over 122 countries. The University employs over 2,500 staff, 27% of which are international staff. With over 135,000 alumni and research collaborations with approximately 5,015 institutes in 178 countries globally. Our international reach and impact are significant and growing.

The College of Science and Engineering comprises five schools: Biological and Chemical Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Computer Science and Natural Sciences. The College hosts three of the University's six cross-college multidisciplinary research institutes (the Data Science Institute, the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation, and the Ryan Institute for Marine, Sustainability, Energy and Environment). The College also hosts several national multi-institutional centres , including the Irish Centre for High-End Computing, and its researchers are leaders in many national research and innovation centres in areas such as data analytics, health technologies, quantum, construction innovation, and energy decarbonisation.

The College is home to over 850 staff (FTE), 54.5% of whom are international staff, and over 5600 students, of which are 68.8% are undergraduates, 20.2% are postgraduate taught, and 11.1% postgraduate research students. Over 66% of research publications involve international collaborators and the College contributes >60% of University of Galway's research activity and substantially to its innovation activity with 75 licences, options and assignments, 251 research agreements, and 24 patents in the period 2020 - 2025.The College is shaped by, and in turn, enriches, the distinctive strengths of Galway and its region in areas such as health technologies, earth, ocean and marine, built environment, data and cybersecurity, and innovative technologies. As a research-intensive college, research and teaching inform each other, and the inter-disciplinarity and collegiality of the College create an environment where innovation and creativity thrive and enable a transdisciplinary approach to education.
The College's research priorities draw on the unique strengths of our region and coalesce around the University's four strategic research pillars. Aligned to the research pillar of Creativity, Culture and Society, the College is fully committed to nurturing and supporting fundamental discovery, theoretical and blue-skies exploratory research for knowledge generation. Aligned to the research pillar of Sustainable and Resilient Environments: Earth and Ocean, research in the College aims to lead the transition to a sustainable future through developing innovative solutions. Research in Transformative Data and AI aims to develop innovative responsible data-driven approaches for intelligent decision-making and reasoning and reliability in sustainable AI. Aligned to the Innovation for Health pillar, research aims to address societal health challenges by accelerating understanding of disease and providing disruptive solutions for health.

Salary: €147,198 to €186,094 per annum applicable to new entrants effective from January 2011)
This appointment will be made on the Established professor scale in line with current Government pay policy and in accordance with the terms and conditions of the University's Remuneration policy.

Duration of Term: The Executive Dean of College is a fixed-term appointment for four years in the first instance, with the option for a further term of four years, while the post of Established Professor is a permanent appointment.
