The Role:

Reporting to the Director of Strategy, Resilience & Regulation, the Commercial Function in Uisce Éireann supports and challenges the organisation in ensuring that business strategies, plans and outcomes are considered from a commercial perspective while operating in a regulated environment and for developing commercial strategies for the organisation. The function provides oversight and governance for the organisations Expenditure Approvals Committee, support to the Board for ad hoc in-depth reviews into particular areas of the business and ultimately has ownership of the Board paper review process.

The Head of Commercial is also responsible for the organisation's Electricity Risk Management Committee and implementing the organisation's electricity hedging strategy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support and challenge the business areas to seek best commercial outcomes to their strategies, plans and performance
  • Oversee the Expenditure Approvals Committee governance process and support the business to produce the appropriate papers for review and sign-off
  • Provide quality assurance of all Board papers, working collaboratively with the business areas in order to support them to develop their capability and accuracy without impacting the technical core of their submissions
  • Act as Chair of the Electricity Risk Management Committee, and implement the organisations electricity hedging strategy
  • Stand up a commercial revenue development capability working with the Customer and Economic Regulation, Finance and Customer Operations areas to create strategies which can start to tap into the commercial revenue potential for the organisation
  • Work with the Customer and Economic Regulation team to support and drive medium and longer term commercial success on regulatory matters
  • Liaise with technical teams across Asset Management and Sustainability, Asset Operations, Customer Operations and Infrastructure Delivery to develop a holistic view of strategies, plans and outcomes expected from a commercial perspective
  • Work with the Finance teams to develop and implement the commercial risk appetite for the organisation
  • Liaise with senior managers across the organisation to provide in-depth, focused reviews as and when requested by the Board
  • Lead and develop a team of professionals, displaying visible leadership and promoting a culture of collaboration and delivery of results


General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders across the UÉ business, including but not limited to; Executive, Finance, Customer & Economic Regulation, Asset Management & Sustainability, Asset Operations, Customer Operations and Infrastructure Delivery.
  • Responsible for promoting and delivering health and safety commitments across UÉ and its supply chain, reinforcing positive behaviours and delivering health and safety objectives and requirements to the highest industry standards
  • Provide visible leadership for the commercial team, coaching and developing them to achieve their full potential and deliver business objectives, promoting collaboration and highlighting the behaviours that are expected from everyone in the team
  • Other duties as required.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 plus years' Experience in the water, utilities or similar industries is required, along with 5+ years working at a senior manager level
  • An accounting, business or economics qualification/degree, with a minimum of 10 years of experience working in commercially focused roles
  • Excellent leadership and people skills required, and a demonstrable ability to attract and develop a high performing committed team
  • Able to work to deadlines and adapt to changing conditions and ambiguity generating effective and pragmatic solutions to new situations and problems as they are presented
  • Can quickly establish credibility and respect and build strong working relationships and influence effectively at all levels, both internally and externally
  • A proven track record of working in a commercially focused environment and working collaboratively across multiple functions and business areas
  • Excellent communicator with the capability to handle complex and difficult situations with thought and confidence
  • Proven track record of successful delivery against Business Objectives within a complex and large organisational context and have demonstrated an ability to align resources across these environments
  • Strong negotiation skills with win/win mindset
  • Financially and commercially astute
  • Experience of implementing policies, systems and controls and overseeing the implementation of progressive policies.
