Peer Support Worker, Cork Youth Housing

Location: Cork

Contract: Part time (30 hours), 1 Year Fixed Term Contract

The Purpose of this role is to work as part of the Cork Youth Housing team in Cork City, to provide additional support to the teams and customers. The support is to include community inclusion and participation, independence, recovery, and resiliency. The Peer Support Worker is an individual with a self-identified lived experience and journey in receiving services and supports from housing/homeless service providers.

What you will do:

  • Peer Worker is trauma-sensitive, mutually explores with peers their experiences, and supports individuals in getting appropriate resources for help, signposting supports those suffering from social exclusion issues.

  • Using your lived experience, share your knowledge to enhance team decision-making by assuring customer voice and choice is included in planning.

  • Provide role modelling and share experiences, providing hope and encouragement and connection to the community.

  • Attend team meetings, supervision, reflective practice and any training or professional development organised by the coordinator which has been identified as beneficial for your progression in the role.

  • Work within the overall policies and procedures of Focus Ireland and those specific to the project you have been assigned to.

  • Deliver care and case management to young people using the model of Life Skills, Family Natural Support and Housing First for Youth.

  • Work within the framework of the overall objectives, strategy and values of Focus Ireland and support Customer participation in the organisation.

  • Work with the Focus Ireland model and standards of best practice.

  • Be vigilant of any Health, Safety and Welfare risks in the workplace and bring any concerns to the attention of your line manager or Health Safety Representative.

  • Undertake such other duties as might be reasonably assigned from time to time in consultation with the Line Manager.

  • Complete administration tasks and input information into a database.

  • Promote respect, diversity, and equal opportunities.

What you will need:

  • Have a lived experience of homelessness, mental health, or addiction.

  • Be at least 2 years in absence-based recovery if relevant.

  • Relevant experience working in a team which shares a common goal.

  • A working knowledge of issues affecting people out-of-home and their impact on people and their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.

  • Understand the importance of boundaries and be comfortable asking for support when needed

  • Be keen to learn new skills.

  • Treat others in a non-judgemental way and with respect.

  • Be a good listener who is interested in others and what they have to offer.

  • Be confident to speak about their own experiences (Desirable)

  • Have good written and verbal communication skills (Desirable)
