Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Scientist within UCD School of Biomolecular & Biomedical Science.

The bioeconomy encompasses the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources into value added products, such as food, feed, biobased products and bioenergy. The SFI funded Bioeconomy research centre (BiOrbic) performs world leading frontier research in collaboration with industry to convert Ireland's natural resources on land and in the sea to a wide range of value added products for the development of a sustainable Irish bioeconomy. Biorbic's research programme aligns with the European Biobased Industries Joint undertaking (BBI-JU) strategic research and innovation agenda (SIRA).

This person hired to this position will investigate the scale up of the production of biobased products using fermentation (biotechnology) and the harvesting of those products emerging from the fermentation. The research project will use Fermentation at pilot scale (>1000L), downstream processing (filtration, solvent extraction, drying) and analytical techniques. This is a multifaceted role requiring industrial or pilot scale experience in fermentation and downstream processing.

Important Note for Applicants & Particular to this Position:

This is a specialist research post (Research Scientist) focused on the scale up of biotechnologies and biomanufacturing technologies (including downstream processing).

- This is a Research Funded position within University College Dublin, however whilst undertaking Research in support of the above stated Project, the post holder will be physically located and working full-time hours for the majority of this appointment in the 'National Biorefining Pilot Plant (NBPP)' in Lisheen, Co. Tipperary. This appointment is to specifically support UCD scale up Projects funded under EU and National funds.

- The successful candidate is expected to be present in UCD from time to time for meetings and to support colleagues undertaking lab-scale experimental work.

- The key deliverables are:
  • Set up and maintenance of pilot scale biorefining equipment at lisheen to support scale up research projects,
  • Bioprocess development at pilot scale for research projects assigned to you by your supervisor,
  • Downstream harvesting of biobased products produced at Lisheen NBPP,
  • Support UCD researchers that visit the NBPP to undertake research at the facilities,
  • Support UCD's partners that visit NBPP to undertake collaborative research with UCD at the facilities.


Fixed Salary: €80,000 Per Annum
