The School of Chemical Sciences, is one of Ireland's most progressive and highest achieving Schools with outstanding facilities, housed within a modern and dynamic city campus. Our goal is to develop graduates with the ability to critically evaluate, and then to solve, chemical and pharmaceutical problems, preparing the highest quality graduates capable of meeting the challenges of modern industry and research. The School is highly successful at attracting large scale research funding, with our researchers having roles within nationally significant university/industry collaborative initiatives and European funded Integrated Training Networks. The Schools undergraduate programmes include the BSc in Analytical Science, the BSc in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the BSc in Chemistry with Artificial Intelligence, and the BSc in Environmental Science & Technology. The School also contributes to the BSc in Science Education.
Role Profile
The School of Chemical Sciences is seeking to appoint a Technical Officer or Senior Technical Officer to join its team in providing advanced technical and training assistance to the School in research, teaching and learning, and outreach activities. The successful candidate will provide expertise in operation and maintenance of high-end instrumentation, developing the Schools research activities, assist in undergraduate teaching laboratories, student recruitment and engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer, duties and tasks of the position include, but are not restricted to the following:
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Criteria:
Applicants for Technical Officer must have an honours degree (NFQ level 8) in chemistry or closely related technical discipline or equivalent qualification/professional experience in a relevant discipline. Applicants for Senior Technical Officer must have at least an master's degree (NFQ level 9) or equivalent qualification/professional experience in a relevant discipline.
Desirable Criteria:
Please note that internal service criteria will apply to internal applicants and staff must have successfully completed their probationary period.
Essential Training:
The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training:
Other training may need to be undertaken when required.
Salary Scale: Technical Officer/Senior Technical Officer - €42,153 - €74,920
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy

Remote Working Policy
DCU operates a Remote Working Policy. Employees may be approved for up to 2 days of remote working per week (or an appropriate pro-rata amount for those part time). Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment and the core University value of 'Student Focused'.
Employees will be based on campus for the majority of their working week to ensure a sustained, on campus engagement and experience. The terms of the remote working policy will apply.

Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer, duties and tasks of the position include, but are not restricted to the following:
- Support teaching activities across all the School's programmes, including laboratory and project work
- Ensure best practice by supervising undergraduate/postgraduate students during project work
- Assist in the update of undergraduate laboratory manuals
- Collate operations manuals and prepare standard operating procedures for equipment and procedures
- Demonstrate practical techniques, processes, and operation of equipment and software to staff, students and visitors in the teaching laboratory, research activities and projects
- Assist the Chief Technical Officer and technical team in ensuring School laboratory equipment is functioning effectively and safely
- Prepare and implement maintenance schedules to meet statutory and university requirements
- Install, assemble, operate, manage and maintain instrumentation
- Monitor and uphold compliance with all health and safety rules and regulations
- Manage a chemicals inventory and maintain stock levels, as appropriate
- Provide technical assistance as appropriate for externally funded research projects, including projects funded by research councils, industry and others
- Assist other members of staff in the School as required
- Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities as required by the School
- Undertake other duties as the Chief Technical Officer and/or the Head of School may assign from time to time
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Criteria:

- Applicants would ideally have a minimum of four years of relevant experience
- Possess the relevant scientific and technical skills to assist with the School's research, teaching and learning, and engagement activities
- Experience in working with high-end experimental equipment
- Expertise in a variety of chemical disciplines
- Demonstratable knowledge of current and emerging scientific technologies and their implementation and integration into the laboratory, notably in fields that are particularly relevant to the research and degree programmes delivered by the School of Chemical Sciences
- Excellent interactive verbal and written communication skills with experience of working, collaborating and establishing credibility and relationships at all levels
- Have a proven track record of working independently and should also demonstrate their ability to work as part of a team
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience of laboratory management
- Experience with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)
- Experience of implementing sustainability measures within a laboratory environment
- Experience of procurement
- Relevant experience/expertise in a similar role in the higher education environment
