Bon Secours Health System has a rich history in Limerick, beginning with the acquisition of Barringtons Hospital on George's Quay in 2017. While the site has served the community well, its limitations led to our vision for a new, state-of-the-art facility to better serve the growing healthcare needs of the region.
In 2021, we took the next step towards this vision by breaking ground on the new Bon Secours Hospital Limerick in Towlerton, Ballysimon, with an investment of €190 million. This new hospital is now open and provides advanced medical and surgical care in a modern, sustainable setting.

Staff Grade Medical Scientist

Full-time (35 hours per week) | Permanent x 1/ Specific Purpose x 1

Salary €41,715.00 - €68,478.00 dependent on relevant experience.

The Purpose of This Role:

The fundamental philosophy guiding this position will be to promote and preserve the Bon Secours mission, values (Human Dignity, Integrity, Compassion, Stewardship & Service) and ethos by effective delivery of mission objectives in your capacity as a Staff Grade Medical Scientist.

Qualifications:

• The bachelor's in science (Applied Science) Honours degree
• Coru Registration

Key Responsibilities:

Under the general direction and control of the Chief Medical Scientist, the Staff Grade

Medical Scientist will be responsible for the following:

• Perform routine work to the highest standard, as determined by laboratory
• Ensure that all samples are processed in accordance with standard operating
• Be responsible for the quality of work in the laboratory and carry out duties in accordance with hospital policy.
• Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital
• Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the hospital.
• Follow Standard Operating Procedures in the performance of tests within the laboratory and actively promote Quality aspects of the work done
• Operate automated analysers including Chemistry, Haematology, Immunoassay and blood gas operation and management of Point of Care equipment.
• Participate in maintenance of equipment both in Biochemistry and in point of care locations as directed by the head of department
• Perform other investigations or tests that are deemed necessary by the head of department or Consultant.
• Participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance.
• Participate in care and maintenance of equipment and decontamination and cleaning of departments as required.
• Participate in record keeping.
• Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the values of the hospital.
• Participation in the out of hours on-call rota is mandatory.
• Observe health and safety awareness while performing duties in the laboratory.
• To perform tasks and duties in a manner that ensures compliance with relevant regulations so that the requirements of International standard ISO 15189 (current version), JCI
• ACCREDITATION STANDARDS for hospitals and relevant Medical Devices Directives 93/42/EC and 98/79/EC are met.

Essential Requirements:

• Coru Registration
• 6 months working as a Medical Scientist in a Clinical Laboratory
• Excellent Communication skills
• Promote and foster a culture of Care, Compassion and Commitment honouring the core values of Bon Secours Hospital System
• Roster will generally be over 5 days a week however a flexible approach to work patterns is required in line with service.
