What is the role? The Senior Scientist II leads scientific programmes that support the development and advancement of Aerogen's respiratory drug delivery technologies. The role operates as a scientific leader within the team, setting technical direction across projects and ensuring delivery of complex, high-impact work.
The role includes leading multiple projects or workstreams, guiding study design, and driving technical decision-making. The Senior Scientist II is responsible for solving complex scientific challenges, advancing analytical and experimental approaches, and ensuring high standards of scientific quality.
The role also involves working closely with external partners, explaining Aerogen technology, and leading collaborative research and development activities. This includes representing Aerogen's technical capability across externally funded programmes, shaping technical discussions, and contributing to grant development and execution in collaboration with Business Development and Regulatory teams.
In addition to technical leadership, the role includes mentoring and developing team members, supporting capability growth, and influencing how the team operates. While maintaining a strong understanding of laboratory work, the role places greater emphasis on leadership, oversight, and strategic contribution.
This role requires demonstrated capability in mentoring others, managing programmes and projects (both internal and external), a strong interest in laboratory-based work, and a solid understanding of relevant testing standards (e.g. ISO 27427, USP <601>, Ph. Eur. 2.9.44).
What are the key responsibilities?
Scientific Leadership & Delivery:
• Define and lead technical direction across projects and programmes, ensuring alignment with R&D strategy.
• Lead and execute advanced in vitro and pre-clinical aerosol science studies (e.g. delivered dose, aerosol performance, formulation compatibility) to support internal and externally funded research programmes.
• Translate project objectives into robust experimental plans, ensuring methods are scientifically sound, reproducible, and aligned with stakeholder expectations.
• Oversee device development, testing, and validation activities, ensuring high quality outputs.
Analytical & Technical Expertise:
• Lead the development, optimisation, and application of analytical methods and experimental approaches (e.g. UV-Vis, HPLC).
• Provide technical leadership on inhaled drug/device compatibility, including formulation properties, device configuration, and aerosolisation risks.
• Identify and resolve complex scientific and technical challenges across projects.
External Collaboration & Grant Programmes:
• Lead technical engagement with external partners, including pharmaceutical companies, academic groups, and research consortia.
• Act as Aerogen's scientific representative within multi-partner grant consortia, contributing to defined work packages.
• Ensure Aerogen's role is clearly represented and aligned with agreed project scope (e.g. advisory vs. delivery responsibilities).
• Contribute to grant applications and proposal development, including technical sections and justification of effort (person-months).
• Author, review, and approve scientific deliverables required for grant milestones (e.g. reports, data packages, experimental summaries).
• Support responses to grant reviews, reporting cycles, and audits.
Data Integrity, Quality & Compliance:
• Generate and manage high-quality scientific data suitable for regulatory submissions, grant reporting, and audit readiness.
• Ensure all work is conducted in line with GLP principles, internal quality systems, and external funding requirements.
• Maintain accurate experimental records, ensuring data traceability and version control.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory, health, safety, and regulatory standards, including oversight of risk assessments and laboratory practices.
• Biological Safety (BSO Support): Support the Biological Safety Officer in overseeing the safe use of biological agents and ensuring compliance with biosafety regulations and internal procedures.
• EHS Responsibilities: Act as a key contact for EHS within the team, supporting compliance with environmental, health, and safety requirements, liaising with Aerogen EHS, and representing the group during audits and inspections as required.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
• Collaborate with Quality, Regulatory, Project Management, and Business Development teams to ensure scientific outputs align with regulatory positioning and company strategy.
• Provide technical input to internal risk assessments related to aerosolisation, formulation handling, and experimental design.
Leadership & Team Development
• Mentor and develop scientists across the team, supporting technical growth and strengthening overall capability.
• Provide clear scientific communication and present complex data to internal stakeholders and external partners.
Continuous Improvement
• Drive improvements in scientific approaches, analytical methods, and laboratory processes.
