Engineering Manager
Climeaction Horizons is an Irish industrial decarbonisation and carbon intelligence consultancy headquartered in Cork, with operations in the US and Brazil. We work with some of Ireland's largest industrial energy users including major pharmaceutical, food beverage, and manufacturing companies helping them reduce energy costs, achieve regulatory compliance, and deliver credible net zero programmes.
Our Irish engineering team is the technical heart of the business. We deliver energy audits, ISO 50001 programmes, measurement verification, capital project management, and Climate Action as a Service (CAaaS) engagements. As we grow, we need strong engineering leadership to maintain delivery excellence, develop our people, and ensure Climeaction remains the most technically credible firm in our space.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Irish engineering practice — a growing team of experienced engineers and graduate engineers working across a portfolio of high-profile industrial clients. This is a pivotal role at the intersection of technical leadership, people management, and client delivery.
The right person will be a Senior or Chartered Engineer with deep expertise in industrial energy efficiency, a strong instinct for developing engineering talent, and the personal presence to hold senior client relationships. You will work closely with the CEO and Technical Director to set and maintain engineering standards, drive delivery performance, and build the capability of the team around you.
This is not a purely administrative management role. We expect the Engineering Manager to remain technically engaged contributing to complex projects, reviewing technical outputs, and mentoring engineers at all levels. At the same time, you will carry clear accountability for the performance, wellbeing, and professional development of the Irish engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership Delivery
• Lead the Irish engineering team, taking overall accountability for the quality, consistency, and timeliness of technical outputs across all active projects
• Set and maintain engineering standards, methodologies, and quality assurance processes including peer review, technical sign-off, and lessons-learned practices
• Oversee the allocation of engineering resources across the project portfolio, balancing workload, capability, and client priorities
• Remain hands-on across technically complex or strategically important projects, providing direct engineering input, review, and guidance
• Work collaboratively with the Technical Director to develop Climeaction's engineering frameworks, tools, and intellectual property
• Ensure all engineering outputs meet regulatory, client, and Climeaction quality standards - including IPMVP, ISO 50001, SEAI, and relevant industry codes
People Management Development
• Line manage a mixed team of experienced engineers and graduate/early-career engineers - providing clear direction, regular feedback, and meaningful support
• Conduct structured performance reviews and development conversations, setting individual objectives aligned to team and business goals
• Act as a mentor and coach to junior and graduate engineers - helping them develop technical competence, professional confidence, and sound engineering judgement
• Identify training needs across the team and work with HR to develop CPD plans, formal training programmes, and progression pathways
• Create an environment where engineers feel supported to take on stretch assignments, ask questions, and develop at pace
• Lead graduate onboarding and early-career development, playing an active role in shaping how new engineers experience Climeaction
• Support recruitment activity for engineering roles, including candidate assessment and technical interviewing
Client Engagement
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with senior client contacts acting as a trusted technical point of contact across a portfolio of industrial accounts
• Attend client sites, steering meetings, and progress reviews, representing Climeaction with credibility and professionalism
• Identify opportunities to expand the scope of Climeaction's engagement with existing clients, working with the commercial team to develop proposals
• Handle technical escalations and client concerns with calm authority, ensuring issues are resolved quickly and relationships are protected
Operations Continuous Improvement
• Contribute to project planning, scheduling, and resourcing decisions at a practice level working with project managers and the leadership team
• Monitor project delivery performance against programme, budget, and quality targets escalating risks and implementing corrective actions as needed
• Drive continuous improvement in Climeaction's engineering delivery processes, tools, and templates
• Support the development of new service offerings and technical capabilities as the business evolves
• Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing facilitating technical sessions, writing guidance notes, and building the team's collective expertise
Person Specification
Essential
• Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Energy Engineering (Level 8 minimum); Chartered Engineer status with Engineers Ireland or equivalent body strongly preferred
• Minimum 10 years of post-qualification engineering experience, with a significant portion in industrial energy efficiency, energy management, or decarbonisation
• Proven experience working with large industrial energy users - pharma, food beverage, manufacturing, or similar at project delivery and client advisory level
• Demonstrated experience managing or formally mentoring engineers, including both experienced professionals and graduates or early-career engineers
• Strong technical breadth across core industrial energy systems: steam, HVAC, compressed air, process heating and cooling, electrical systems, and building services
• Experience with energy auditing and measurement verification including IPMVP Option methodologies and SEAI audit standards
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - able to engage with senior client stakeholders, inspire junior engineers, and represent the firm externally
• Highly organised with the ability to manage competing priorities, multiple concurrent projects, and team workload across a fast-paced consultancy environment
• A hands-on leadership style someone who leads from the front, maintains technical engagement, and earns the respect of their team through competence and character
Desirable
• Chartered Energy Engineer (Energy Institute) or equivalent specialist qualification
• Experience with ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems, including gap analysis, system implementation, and internal auditing
• Knowledge of the Irish Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme (EEOS), LIEN programme, or other regulatory energy efficiency frameworks
• Familiarity with carbon accounting, Scope 1/2/3 emissions reporting, and industrial decarbonisation pathways
• Experience in a consultancy or multi-client environment, with exposure to proposal writing, project costing, or business development
• Graduate mentoring experience in a structured professional development or CPD context (e.g., Engineers Ireland Mentoring Programme)
Who Thrives in This Role
The best Engineering Managers at Climeaction are people who genuinely care about two things in equal measure: doing excellent technical work and helping others grow. If you find satisfaction in reviewing a junior engineer's report and making it better, not just correcting it, but explaining why this role is for you.
You will work in a small, high-performing team where your decisions have direct and visible impact. There is no large corporate structure to hide behind. You will need to be comfortable with ambiguity, willing to roll up your sleeves, and confident in your own technical judgement when it matters.
In return, you will have real autonomy, access to a genuinely interesting project portfolio, and the opportunity to shape how engineering is practised at a firm that is growing fast and doing meaningful work.
What We Offer
Competitive salary aligned to CEng/Senior Engineer market benchmarks
Annual performance bonus linked to team and individual delivery
Hybrid working based in Cork with client travel across Ireland
Employer pension contribution
CPD support and professional membership fees (Engineers Ireland, Energy Institute)
Senior leadership role in a B Corp-certified consultancy with genuine impact
