What you will be doing:
- Develop detailed and accurate estimates for mechanical engineering works based on outline drawings and specifications
- Ensure that estimates reflect a realistic level of risk and adhere to company guidelines and industry standards
- Engage in the design development process to evaluate buildability, material selection, innovative solutions, and cost-effectiveness
- Provide early-stage pricing information during tendering to assist in optioneering and budgeting, ensuring that the most cost-effective solutions are proposed
- Ensure all procedures, including risk management and governance processes, are followed, thoroughly documented, and properly authorised
- Contribute to the development of Tender Preparation and Tender Construction programmes
- Collaborate with other functions to prepare a detailed staff schedule for tenders, using insights from successful projects
- Work with central and regional buyers to prepare a procurement plan, identifying suppliers and subcontractors, and negotiating terms, conditions, and discount levels
- Prepare and send out enquiries to obtain competitive quotations for mechanical engineering resources, particularly materials and subcontractors
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technical developments and new methods within the mechanical engineering industry
- Apply this knowledge to enhance the accuracy and competitiveness of estimates
- Develop financial models for framework submissions, including setting appropriate staff rates and ensuring these are aligned with project budgets
- Utilise the standardised cost coding system to enable meaningful feedback and future cost capture, ensuring consistency and accuracy in financial tracking
Who we are looking for:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical estimating, preferably within the water, wastewater, or construction sectors
- Proven track record in preparing detailed and accurate mechanical estimates
- Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and construction methods
- Proficiency in cost estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
