Role Overview:
This is an initial 12-month contract opportunity for an experienced Infrastructure Lead to provide senior technical leadership for the planning, delivery, and commissioning of ICT infrastructure within a major new hospital build. The role is accountable for ensuring a resilient, secure, and clinically safe digital environment from early design stages through to final handover and operational readiness.
The Infrastructure Lead will act as a key technical authority, coordinating ICT strategy and delivery across multidisciplinary stakeholders including estates, design teams, Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) contractors, project leadership, clinical services, and vendors. The role will ensure the successful delivery of enterprise-grade, hospital-critical network, voice, data centre, and connectivity services, fully aligned with regulatory, security, and operational performance standards.

Key Responsibilities
1) Programme Delivery & Build Lifecycle
- Lead ICT infrastructure delivery from design through to commissioning and go-live.
- Coordinate ICT integration with construction teams, estates, design consultants, and contractors.
- Review technical designs, contractor submissions, and as-built documentation.
- Manage readiness checks, installation sign-off, and commissioning activities (Factory Acceptance Testing, site installation, Site Acceptance Testing, Integrated Systems Testing)
2) Structured Cabling & Communications Rooms
- Overseeing structured cabling to healthcare standards (e.g., Cat6A, fibre OM4/OM5, single-mode), pathways, labeling, and test certification.
- Coordinate with the design team for design and deliver MDF/IDF spaces (rack layouts, power/UPS, environmental monitoring, access control, fire detection/suppression readiness).
3) Network & Wireless Infrastructure
- Design and deliver hospital-grade Local Area Network (LAN), Network Access Control (NAC)/802.1X, segmentation/VLANs, Quality of Service (QoS), and resilient core/distribution/edge.
- Engineer Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) 6/6E coverage (throughout the hospital including complex areas like clinical, theatres, imaging suites, wards) with RF surveys, Alarm Management, Real-Time Location Services (RTLS) support, and interference management.
- Implement internet & Wide Area Network (WAN) with dual diverse fibre, Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN)/Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) as appropriate, and secure remote access for support vendors.
4) Voice & Communications Systems
- Deliver IP telephony/Unified Communications (UC), Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT)/Voice over Wi-Fi, integration with nurse call, public address, crash team/Code Blue call flows, and on-call/rota routing.
- Support migration plans for legacy paging/bleep where required; ensure resilience and call recording where mandated.
5) Clinical & Operational Systems Integration
- Enable safe connectivity on converged network for medical devices (in conjunction with Clinical Engineering Department), Building Management System (BMS), security (Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV)/Access Control System (ACS)), ePrescription, Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)/Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA), Radiology Information System (RIS)/Laboratory Information System (LIS), theatres, maternity, ED, pharmacy automation, and Internet of Things (IoT)/Operational Technology (OT).
- Apply International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 80001-1 principles for risk management of IT networks incorporating medical devices; maintain device/segment inventories and isolation policies.
6) Data Centre, Edge & Cloud
- Deliver on-premise and cloud-integrated infrastructure (virtualisation, storage, backup, DR).
- Ensure alignment of recovery objectives with service criticality.
- Support monitoring, capacity planning, and scalable design.
7) Security & Compliance
- Implement secure-by-design principles including identity, access control, and segmentation.
- Work with security teams to ensure compliance with GDPR and ISO standards.
- Support vulnerability management, audits, and security testing.
8) Testing, Go-Live & Handover
- Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)/SAT, Integrated Systems Testing (IST), and live failover tests for core services (network, voice, Wi-Fi, edge, DR).
- Manage cutover plans, hypercare staffing, and handover to operations with full as-built documentation, asset/Configuration Management Database (CMDB), and support runbooks.
- Define operational SLAs/SLOs, support models, and knowledge transfer to hospital ICT teams.
9) Procurement & Vendor Management
- Support procurement processes and technical evaluations.
- Manage supplier delivery against scope, cost, and timelines.
- Oversee contracts, SLAs, and vendor performance.
10) Stakeholder Engagement
- Run workshops and walkthroughs with clinical services, nursing, theatres, ED, diagnostics, facilities, estates, and executive sponsors.
- Produce clear drawings, schedules, cutover packs, and communications; support training and adoption.
Requirements
- 5+ years' experience in ICT infrastructure or network engineering roles.
- Experience delivering large-scale infrastructure projects in complex environments.
- Strong knowledge of LAN/WAN, Wi-Fi, voice, data centre, and cloud technologies.
- Experience with structured cabling and ICT commissioning in major builds.
- Strong vendor and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams and deliver under tight timelines.
- Degree in IT, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Relevant certifications (e.g. Cisco, Microsoft, VMware, ITIL) desirable.
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
