Applications are invited for an appointment as a permanent Lecturer in Physiology with expertise in human muscle physiology, metabolism and/or integrative physiology with strong background in data analysis. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and academic leadership within the discipline of Physiology and across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the health and biomedical sciences.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognised research programme in an area aligned with human physiology, specifically muscle physiology, metabolism and/or integrative physiology with strong background in data analysis and focus on translational science. The successful candidate will contribute substantially to the delivery of physiology teaching across Medicine, allied health programmes, Science and Pharmacy and MSc programs including development of new offerings. The successful candidate will have a PhD and undergraduate or taught postgraduate degree(s) in Physiology or a closely related Biomedical Science discipline, experience of teaching Physiology to diverse student cohorts at third level, and evidence of research excellence commensurate to the career stage, demonstrated by publications, grant funding, international recognition. Their research experience must be in the field of muscle physiology, metabolism and/or integrative physiology with strong background in data analysis. They should have an ability to motivate others, be team players and possess excellent communication and organisational skills.

The successful candidate will be located in the Human Biology Building which provides excellent research and teaching facilities in a dynamic, collaborative environment. The position offers an opportunity to join a dynamic and collaborative academic environment with strong links to clinical medicine, biomedical science, and translational research at the University of Galway.

Additional information on the Discipline:

The discipline of Physiology is one of the longest established disciplines at University of Galway. Housed in the Human Biology Building, we are a vibrant discipline with teaching and research activities closely linked to communities. Physiology is a core subject in a large number of undergraduate programmes including Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, Health Sciences, Science, Biomedical Science and Engineering. Furthermore, Physiology contributes to a number of postgraduate programmes, PhD training and leads the MSc in Exercise Physiology and its Application in Therapy and MSc in Exercise Physiology and Rehabilitation. Research programmes in Physiology focus around ageing, skeletal muscle and metabolism, neuroscience, cardiovascular, respiratory and renal systems and how they integrate. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to these educational programmes, whilst also conducting research complementary to that of the existing academic staff within the discipline of Physiology and the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences.

Salary: €65,552 to €104,573 p.a (applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011)

The full-time hours of work for academic staff are 39 hours per week.
