ABOUT THE ROLE
The Hardware Engineer is a hands-on individual focused on deployment, validation, optimisation, and support of personalisation systems (e.g., passport/ID printers). Responsible for delivering robust, high-performance solutions into live environments while contributing to upstream definition and development.
Key Responsibilities
1. Implementation & Delivery (Primary Focus)
- Lead FAT, SAT, CAT, and UAT testing, including test plans and acceptance criteria
- Install, configure, commission, and deploy personalisation equipment and supporting IT infrastructure
- Perform calibration, fine-tuning, and optimisation (print quality, mechanical alignment, laser engraving, document transport)
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical and transport issues (jams, misfeeds, wear, alignment)
- Support deployment into live environments and ensure successful handover to operations (readiness, training, ramp-up)
2. Operational Support & Optimisation
- Provide hands-on support for hardware in live environments
- Troubleshoot end-to-end issues across hardware, software, and IT layers
- Maintain system performance through calibration, optimisation, and transport tuning
- Investigate recurring issues and implement root cause fixes
- Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to resolve defects and improve system reliability
- Ensure compliance with quality, configuration, and operational standards
3. Development & Supplier Engagement (Supporting Role)
- Contribute to requirements, specifications, and technical validation
- Work with R&D, IT, procurement, and suppliers to ensure integrated, supportable solutions
- Support supplier selection and performance management
- Provide input into improvements in calibration, transport reliability, and operational efficiency
- Manage risks, issues, change control, and configuration
- Maintain documentation and provide progress reporting
- Support audits, compliance, and assurance activities
- Build strong cross-functional relationships (Delivery, Engineering, IT, suppliers)
ABOUT YOU
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Engineering degree or related discipline
Experience
- Hands-on experience in hardware implementation and support
- Strong background in FAT/SAT/CAT/UAT, installation, and commissioning
- Expertise in calibration, mechanical adjustment, and optimisation of precision/mechatronic systems
- Proven ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues
- Experience with suppliers and live operational environments
- Strong root cause analysis, change/configuration management, and continuous improvement capabilites
- Detail-oriented, methodical, and hands-on
- High focus on quality, precision, and reliability
- Proactive, resilient, and effective under pressure
- Strong communication across technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desired experience
- Solid IT infrastructure knowledge (servers, networking, system integration)
- Experience in secure identity or regulated environments
- Exposure to manufacturing/production systems
- Knowledge of system security/hardening
